Installing Damp Proof Membrane Floor

Damp rising through concrete floor slabs is fairly common when a damp proof membrane has failed or was not installed before the floor was laid.

It becomes a problem when the moisture levels are too high and water is transferred to the finishing layer above. Two options are available when faced with a damp floor. They do however always require a separate floor covering on top and special attention needs to be paid to the floor wall junction detail. Essentially this is a plastic mesh sheet specially formulated to ensure that moisture cannot penetrate.

Fully isolate the dampness from the floor covering. Option 1 install a floor membrane. If the slab is in poor condition then the most comprehensive solution is often to replace it and install a new damp proof membrane below. The damp proof membranes used during construction of concrete floors are often thin and can easily become torn before they are laid rendering them.

Damp proofing membranes are the easier faster and more reliable way to damp proof properties. This barrier is intended to stop moisture passing from one to the other. They can be used on walls after the installation of a new dpc or to provide a key or as a dpm with a concrete slab. This can either be the use of a damp proof coating which is applied on the surface of the concrete or a membrane on top of the concrete.

Physical damp proof membranes such as oldroyd xs slimline membrane are often quicker and easier to install than using damp proof coatings as they can be installed on still damp surfaces. All types of floor coverings can be installed on top of a plastic membrane. A damp proof coating will be applied onto the concrete floor with a roller or brush. Replace the damp floor.
